Wednesday, June 3, has gone down as the darkest day in the history of Ghana as floods and fire took the lives of 152 people at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

Comfort, a victim of the twin disaster, was on her way to render accounts of her weekly sales of GHc1,400 to her employer when she got stuck at Circle due to heavy downpour.

According to Comfort, she had no choice than to seek shelter at the GCB Tower adjacent the GOIL filling station due to the force of the rushing water from the Odaw River.

However, sooner than she had anticipated, the gushing waters from the Odaw River started to submerge them from where she was seeking refuge with other victims.

According to her, “it was like a judgment day and I started praying to God for my life”.

She recounted that she and another victim standing next to her began smelling a strong scent of petrol in the air and less than 20 minutes “I saw a storm of fire heading towards us”.

She tried to survive by going under the water to get away from the fire but became helpless and weak and was carried away by the flood.

According to her, she was rescued by a Good Samaritan at Adabraka and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Comfort. who sustained burns on her face and hands told Naa Ashorkor on The Zone on Starr 103.5FM that she is yet to come to terms with the number of people who lost their lives on that fateful day.

According to her, before she was taken to the hospital she saw so many lifeless charred bodies on the streets around the fuel station.

I was overwhelmed by the number of people who also got burnt by the fire; I could feel the pain they endured before their death, ” she added.

Comfort has stated that she will go back and sell since she has no other option to make ends meet.

Comfort added that she had learnt very important lessons from the floods and fire outbreak which she had never seen in her entire life.

She, however, thanked God for her life, saying surviving the disaster means a lot to her than any other thing in her life.
