Hassan Ayariga, the 2012 Presidential candidate of the People’s National Convention (PNC) has called on the government as a matter of urgency to evacuate people living on watercourses.

He said with the upcoming rains, the need to evacuate people living along watercourses had become imperative.

Floods hit many parts of the capital, Accra after hours of torrential rains and the GOIL filling station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle exploded last week Wednesday. The lives of over 100 people were lost and others were injured. The incident also left many residents homeless and roads impassable.

The rain began around 5:30 p.m. and ended at around 11:15 p.m. but left in its wake a disaster of unimaginable proportions.

In a telephone interview, Mr Ayariga also asked Ghanaians to support government efforts to save lives and properties and further challenged them to work together to support Ghanaians in times of need.

“What government is doing is to protect the lives of its citizens and it is incumbent on all to lend a helping hand,” he stressed.

According to Mr Ayariga, now that we are in the rainy season, nobody knows when the next rain will come.

He, therefore, suggested to the appropriate authorities to send out an early warning signals to get the nation ready for any eventuality.

He also extended his deepest condolences to all those affected by the floods, particularly to the families and friends of the over 150 Ghanaians killed and injured in the unprecedented explosion at the GOIL filling station in Accra on the night of June 3, 2015.

He also prayed for the speedy recovery of all those injured following the floods that devastated parts of Accra.

Mr Ayariga also expressed the hope that the tragedy that befell the nation must be a wakeup call for the nation to work together to take appropriate measures to prevent such a disaster and needless deaths from happening again. #NambePatrickGH
